Friends of the University Library
 |
A library needs friends. This is most definitely true of Leuven's University Library, for it has been maltreated through the centuries: plundered by the French in 1797, burnt to the ground by the Prusians in 1914, burnt down again in 1940 and, as if that were not enough, split in two, with half its holdings transferred to the offshoot university, Louvain-la-Neuve, in 1968. In short, it has been ill-used by politicians and soldiery alike.
Leuven's University Library, however, is by no means an impoverished war widow. Like the proverbial phoenix it has risen from its ashes time and again. Having a tradition three and a half centuries long and possessing 4.2 million books spread over numerous subsidiary libraries, the Leuven University Library is one of the principal libraries of Belgium.
It is a repository laden with treasures, memorabilia, rariora and preciosa, ranging from the Anjou Bible in the Theology (Godgeleerdheid) Library to the Central Library's Cranevelt correspondence containing letters from Erasmus and Thomas More. Librarians, to be sure, are not primarily treasure-hunters, yet a library serving 3.000 academics and some 25.000 students will inevitably acquire a significant patrimony.
Outreach is essential for a library such as this. Therefore the Leuven University Library produces publications, exhibitions, catalogues and also its own house organ, Ex officina. Friends, too, are essential - friends who will provide moral support, donate books, contribute financially. |
