periodicals in EBIB |
Journals
or periodicals are continuous publications such as journals,
newspapers, magazines. Learned journals report on
developments in scholarly research in the form of articles
which ar normally refereed by peers (peer-reviewed) in the
field of expertise to which the journal is dedicated. Professional
journals are newsletter-type publications of associations
and are written for members of the association. They often
contain a mixture of news, brief articles and letters along
with information on forthcoming events such as conferences.
Most statistics and official publications are also
continuous publications. The EBIB
holding list of current/continuous publications includes
this type of publications as well. Nevertheless, statistics
and official publications are treated as a seperate item on
the portal starting page.
Journal titles can be searched in library
catalogues or in bibliographies. The Limo-catalogue includes
records for all the periodicals which are acquired by the
K.U. Leuven and Limo-net libraries. The Limo-catalogue does
not include information on the articles within those periodicals.
To find references to individual journal articles by
subject, article author, or article title, use periodical
indexes or indexing & abstracting databases.
To find the (full) text of the articles use
catalogues to locate the journal (title) or use full-text
(journals) databases.
Journal titles:
To locate a print or electronic copy of a journal
use journal catalogues to find out which library collection
has the journal you are looking for. Serials directories are
lists of journal titles with publisher's and price info but
without location. Access to full text journals is handled
as a separate item.Referecence databases often link directly
- via the button - check for holdings - to the periodicals
union catalogye Antilope for the journals which are not available
full text (e.g. ABI/Inform, EconLit, Inspec, Current Contents,
Ebscohost etc.).
Journal catalogues:

titles are integrated in the title index, e.g. if you Browse
indexes for Harvard Business Review you get 8 items
incl. the journal with a list of copies & holdings
in the different Limo-Net libraries.

Current awareness services:
To find articles published within the last six
months, many may not yet have been indexed. Therefore you
wille need to use alerting or current awareness services. An
alerting service lets you know what has just been published
or is about to be published. Alerting services attempt to
bridge the gap between the time an article is published
in a journal and the time when it is indexed in an indexing
journal.
Full text e-journals:
Roughly speaking electronic journals are offered
in two ways:
- publishers who provide access to their
own titles and
- aggregators who provide access to the content of journals,
based on agreements with publishers and content providers.
There is not always a clear distinction between
both. The easiest way to access e-journals being sure you
don't miss any is to start at UB-webpage e-sources.
