Search for journal titles and articles

Journals or periodicals are continuous publications such as journals, newspapers, magazines. Learned journals report on developments in scholarly research in the form of articles which ar normally refereed by peers (peer-reviewed) in the field of expertise to which the journal is dedicated. Professional journals are newsletter-type publications of associations and are written for members of the association. They often contain a mixture of news, brief articles and letters along with information on forthcoming events such as conferences. Most statistics and official publications are also continuous publications. The EBIB holding list of current/continuous publications includes this type of publications as well. Nevertheless, statistics and official publications are treated as a seperate item on the portal starting page.

Journal titles can be searched in library catalogues or in bibliographies. The LIBIS-catalogue includes records for all the periodicals which are acquired by the K.U. Leuven and LIBIS-net libraries. The LIBIS-catalogue does not include information on the articles within those periodicals. To find references to individual journal articles by subject, article author, or article title, use periodical indexes or indexing & abstracting databases.
To find the (full) text of the articles use catalogues to locate the journal (title) or use full-text (journals) databases. Journal articles
The main type of tool that will help you to find articles on your topic is that of indexes and abstracts. These are reference sources which record in an organized way the contents of journals. Increasingly abstracting and indexing services for journals are available on CD-ROM and online as full text. This means that CD- ROM or website provides access to the full-text of articles which have been indexed by the service. Therefore there is no need to search first the CD-ROM and afterwards locate a copy of the relevant journal.

  • Bibliographies, abstracting & indexing services:
    • Multidisciplinary:
      • IBZ -Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur aus allen Gebieten des Wissens. (GBV)

You have only free access to the full text of journals for which K.U.Leuven pays a subscription. For access to other journal articles there is a pay-per-view system. Pay-per-view deliveryof electronic articles is dependant on publisher policy and a small number of electronic journals are not available as pay-per-view. EBIB does not have (yet) a library deposit account for pay-per-view delivery. Please contact the librarian if you have questions.
      • For the latest bibliographic data of journal articles use Current Contents Connect. Weekly updates of the most current version of the CC databases. Browse tables of contents by discipline or journal title for articles, editorials, meeting abstracts, book reviews etc.
    • Specific discipline:
    • EconLit is a source of citations and abstracts to economics research going back to 1969. • Other disciplines:
Complete overview of all databases available via K.U.Leuven intranet. You can also go the websites of other K.U.Leuven libraries, which offer you more information for specific disciplines, and manuals for certain databases (mostly only in Dutch), e.g. Handleidingen databanken sociale wetenschappen.
  • Citation indexes:
Citation indexes are based on the concept that references (citations) in a book or article indicate subject relationships between the current article and previous and posterior publications. Contrary to the most other bibliographic systems, with citation indexes you can search forward in the time, from older to later publications. Web of Science (WoS) consists of three separate databases that can be searched independently or in combination: Science Citation Index (SCI), Social ScienceCitation Index (SSCI), Arts and Humanities Index (AHCD). WoS is a product of the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), as is Current Contents and Journal Citations Reports (JCR). Go to the ISI website for more info.
  • Journal titles:
To locate a print or electronic copy of a journal use journal catalogues to find out which library collection has the journal you are looking for. Serials directories are lists of journal titles with publisher's and price info but without location. Access to full text journals is handled as a separate item.Referecence databases often link directly - via the button - check for holdings - to the periodicals union catalogye Antilope for the journals which are not available full text (e.g. ABI/Inform, EconLit, Inspec, Current Contents, Ebscohost etc.).
  • Journal catalogues:
    • In the LIBIS-catalogue journal titles are integrated in the title index, e.g. if you Browse indexes for Harvard Business Review you get 8 items incl. the journal with a list of copies & holdings in the different LIBIS-Net libraries.
    • Use Antilope - the union catalogue of periodicals - to find journals in the Royal Library, other university, research and special libraries in Belgium. Also the collections of the Technische Universiteit Delft (TUD), the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie voor Wetenschappen (KNAW), the Landbouwuniversiteit Wageningen (BLUW) ,the Institut National pour l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST) and the British Library Document Supply Centre (UK). You can easily put an ILL request for items from this libraries. You can also search Antilope via the CCB - Union Catalogue of Belgian Research Libraries

    • ZDB - ZeitschriftenDatenBank is the union catalogue of periodicals in German libraries.
    • Myriade - Catalogue collectif national des publications en série, union catalogue of periodicals in French libraries.
  • Lists of journals:
  • Current awareness services:
To find articles published within the last six months, many may not yet have been indexed. Therefore you wille need to use alerting or current awareness services. An alerting service lets you know what has just been published or is about to be published. Alerting services attempt to bridge the gap between the time an article is published in a journal and the time when it is indexed in an indexing journal.

Use also Current Contents for the latest bibliographical data of journal articles. Full text e-journals:
Roughly speaking electronic journals are offered in two ways:
    1. publishers who provide access to their own titles and
    2. aggregators who provide access to the content of journals, based on agreements with publishers and content providers.

There is not always a clear distinction between both. The easiest way to access e-journals being sure you don't miss any is to start at UB-webpage e-sources

  • Databases of electronic journals
    • Ebscohost:
A one-stop reference system, being the same time a bibliographical instrument with references to journal articles, and a full text database. Ebscohost gives access to three databases:
