Search hints

On this webpage, you’ll find the index sheets of some map series of Belgium. They are shown as an indication to find maps in LIMO, but not as a record of the library’s collection. So if you can’t find a certain map, it’s possible that we just don’t have it.

A query for maps contains some of the following elements:

  • words from the series title
  • name of the map sheet: always a place name or a combination of place names
  • number of the map sheet
  • scale                                  

These search terms can be simply filled in with interspaces between them, but truncations and Boolean operators can be used as well. For example:

  • topografische kaart belgië 1:10.000 :  this will retrieve (too) many results, but gives you an impression of what the library has to offer
  • topografische kaart belgië leuven : gives  results for the map sheet of Leuven, but  only if it is called ‘Leuven’ (and not ‘Louvain’, for example)
  • topografische kaart belgië (leuven OR louvain): in this way both linguistic variants are included in the query
  • topografische kaart belgie 32/*: a truncation with * helps you to find map sheet 32 as well as 32/1, 32/2, 32/1-2, 32/3...

Some more hints:

  • As for the scale, always use the following notation: 1:10.000, 1:25.000, 1:100.000...
  • Maps can be separated from other material types using a search filter. In the left column of the LIMO screen, click ‘Refine my results’, then ‘ Resource Type’, then ‘Maps’.
  • To find results for only our library, again, choose in the left column of the LIMO-screen: ‘Refine my results’, then ‘Libraries K.U.Leuven’, then ‘Campusbibl. Arenberg’.

Note: sample queries on this page are in Dutch or French. Queries in English might work as well, although it isn’t guaranteed that they give the same results.
