Journals
- You can find this collection at: Ladeuzezaal, East-Asian Library, Tabularium and stacks.
Journals are periodicals of which each issue consist of a compilation of articles discussing the latest developments within a specific research field. You can find journals in all kinds of sizes and formats, handling a wide range of subjects. In most cases they are considered to be primary literature.
As in other parts of the information chain digitization of scientific journals is coming on substantially. In some research fields, for example biomedical sciences or exact and applied sciences, journals in print hardly exist anymore.
- In some cases you can find a journal in an open shelf system:
- in the East-Asian Library
- in the Tabularium
- In some cases you can find only recent issues of a (current) journal in the open shelf system:
- Journals on general topics: at the Ladeuzezaal
- Library and Information sciences: at the Ladeuzezaal
- Current reference works: in Main Reading Room
- In the above case, older volumes and issues are on shelf in the stacks. Or, in some cases, all the volumes of a journal are put on shelf in the stacks.
- If you need a volume or issue that is located in the stacks you can fill in a request form. Please make sure you also write down the year of publication and (or) volume number of the journal on your request form.
A small number of journals is systematically sent to the binder as soon as a volume is complete. This means you won't be able to consult them for a few weeks.
Within the frame of collection building policies a few rationalisation projects were carried out on journal titles in print in order to avoid double titles and double acquisition: only one K.U.Leuven library can buy and keep one and the same journal title. Within the field of biomedical sciences this principle is even implemented on Flemish level so certain journal titles can be found in only one Flemish scientific library.
On the other hand, we choose to buy the full text electronic archive of certain periodicals. The subscription of the printed version is then discontinued. However, due to license agreements this is not applicable to all periodicals.
