The East-Asian Library (LSIN) was inaugurated in the Central Library building in 1996. The university establishes here a collection about language, culture, religion and general social subjects from China, Japan and Korea, which is unique for Belgium. The approximate 60,000 publications are in the languages of these countries, as well as in western languages.

Collection

Books

All books in Western languages, as well as an important part of the works in Chinese, Japanese and Korean have been recorded in the catalogue and can be found through Limo and the LIBISng catalogue. The remainder of the collection in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Manchu or Tibetan can be found locally in the card catalogue. For more information see Chinese in the catalogue and Japanese and Korean books in LSIN.
The most important part of the book collection can be found in open shelves on the second floor, above the reading room of the East-Asian library. The other books are stored in the closed attics. Please do not hesitate to ask the librarian.
Electronic books and databases can be consulted via e-sources.

Reference works

Reference works like dictionaries, biographies, bibliographies, indexes, encyclopedias and anthologies can be found in the reading room.

Journals

The complete collection of journals can be searched by title in the online catalogue. Please use the romanization in Chinese (pinyin), Japanese and Korean when searching for journal titles. There is also a very detailed card catalogue with all the journal titles in the reading room. Recent issues of current journals are placed alphabetically in the reading room. Older issues and journal collections are in the closed attics and can be consulted on request.

Blaue Leihverkehr

Blaue Leihverkehr: Free interlibrary loan service from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (German state library) for books and journal articles in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Please contact the librarian.

Looking for volunteers

The East-Asian Library seeks volunteers for cataloging Chinese and Korean books. Knowledge of the Chinese or Korean language is necessary. Please contact the librarian.
